The Vitamin B Content of White Yautia, Yellow Yautia and Plantain1,2,

1. The vitamin B content of three Porto Rican food plants has been investigated.
2. The plantain (Musa paradisiaca) contains about 0.3 unit in 1 gram and can be considered as a fair source of the vitamin B, having about the same content as carrots, white potatoes and turnips.
3. The white and yellow yautias (Xanthosoma) were found to contain 0.6 and 1.0 unit of vitamin B per gram respectively. They are thus good sources of this vitamin, the yellow ranking with canned navy beans and spinach, and being half as potent as raw peas, while the white is about half as potent as the yellow.

2 Since the completion of the tests reported in this paper it has been shown quite clearly that vitamin B consists of at least two factors. It is the combined effect of the mixture of these factors upon growth and well-being of experimental animals that is measured in the work reported here.
