One pulmonary and five hepatic echinococcus (hydatid) cysts were diagnosed and treated at the Los Angeles County General Hospital during the twelve-year period 19361948. One patient, a 14 year old California-born Japanese schoolboy, reported in detail, is believed to represent the first autochthonous case from California.
The antigens used in the Casoni tests reported in this paper were collected and prepared by Dr. John F. Kessel, Head Medical Microbiologist, Los Angeles County Hospital and the tests were performed under his supervision. Figure I, which shows a typical positive test was photographed at his request and is a part of his teaching collection of lantern slides. The photographs were made by the Department of Photography, Los Angeles County Hospital.
