Aureomycin,2 when administered by the oral route, appears to be effective against the Treponema pallidum (1, 2). To date there have been no reports on the activity of aureomycin on Treponema pertenue of yaws. In another paper (3) we have described the normal morphological appearances of Treponema pertenue as observed with the phase contrast microscope.
From the primary or secondary lesions of 20 patients who were being treated with aureomycin for yaws, we obtained Treponema pertenue for examination with the phase contrast microscope. The series of changes to be described were compared with the appearances of normal treponemata removed from the same or from similar lesions prior to instituting therapy. Two schedules of therapy were used. In one the aureomycin was administered orally in 2 gram doses once daily for five consecutive days, and in the other, oral doses of 5 grams, 3 grams and 2 grams were given successively on each of three days.
