ERNEST MUIR, C.M.G., C.I.E., M.D., F.R.C.S. Edin. Manual of Leprosy

Medical Adviser. British Empire Leprosy Relief Association; Secretary, International Leprosy Association; Late Research Worker in Leprosy, School of Tropical Medicine, Calcutta. pp. viii plus 208, with 70 figures, some in color. The Williams and Wilkins Company, Baltimore, 1948. $5.00

G. W. McCoy

This is the second new book on leprosy by British authorities in about a year, the other being the Practical Text Book of Leprosy by Dr. R. G. Cochrane of Madras. The appearance of the two volumes probably indicates a new interest in the subject, due to the more recent encouraging outlook for patients on account of the introduction of the newer therapeutic agents and to a new and more intelligent interest in the public health aspects of leprosy.

Dr. Muir is an experienced student of the disease and might be considered the dean of British leprologists. This work, as the name implies, is a hand book for the busy practitioner and for doctors, nurses and laymen who have to deal with leprosy.

The book is divided into 27 chapters, arranged in three parts, the first being devoted to the nature of leprosy, including classification; the second is devoted to diagnosis and treatment; the third deals with control measures in a broad sense.
