The Components of the B2 Complex in the Cohn Liver Extract in Relation to Sprue

Edward B. Vedder
From the Department of Experimental Medicine, George Washington University Medical School

It is generally recognized that in addition to the corpuscle maturing factor (E.M.F.) the Cohn fraction, which in various stages of purification forms the basis of all commercial liver extracts, also contains a factor which restores the ability of the intestine to absorb fats and other foods; an ability which is lost in sprue and which is responsible for most of its symptomatology (1). It is highly desirable to identify this factor.

In order to obtain experimental evidence concerning this latter factor it was determined to feed rats a diet adequate except for thiamine and the B2 complex but with the addition of the Cohn fraction of liver extract, and subsequently adding synthetic vitamins of the B2 complex as they were required to ensure growth. Any of these vitamins that were not required would presumably be present in the liver extract.

EXPERIMENT The diet used was as follows:

Casein, vitamin free 360 grams
