The second edition of Joyeux's textbook of Tropical Medicine is a marked improvement over the original work which appeared in 1927. It has been expanded from a small volume of 800 poorly bound and poorly illustrated pages to a handsome textbook of some 1250 pages.

The subject matter is presented in three parts. Part I is a systematic discussion of tropical diseases as they affect specific organs and systems (gastro-intestinal, respiratory, skin, etc.). This section fills about 600 pages. Part II treats the tropical fevers and contains many excellent reproductions of typical temperature curves. Part III is a brief discussion of unclassified diseases, venomous snakes, fishes and insects and poisonous plants.

The senior author, Ch. Joyeux, primarily a parasitologist but with a broad experience in clinical medicine, and the junior author, A. Sicé, a well known professor of tropical medicine in the Marseilles School of Tropical Hygiene, have created an excellent French textbook of troppical medicine, designed especially for the guidance of civil and military physicians practicing in the Asiatic and African colonies.
