In this most readable and interesting work Doctor Chambers has contributed a valuable document upon the history of medicine in the United States, of special interest to all who are interested in tropical diseases. One has but to read this book to realize the great advance that preventive medicine has made in this country and the ravages that cholera and yellow fever made during the early development of the nation. It is almost impossible to picture the horrible conditions that existed in some of our cities during the epidemics of cholera that occurred at various times in this country, and when to this scourge were added epidemics of yellow fever, as happened in New Orleans, the picture of the conditions present, so graphically depicted in this volume, leads one to the conclusion that had preventive medicine failed in the prophylaxis of these diseases the development of the Mississippi valley would have been greatly delayed and hampered.
