Yellow Fever in Venezuela in 1929¹

In 1928 and 1929, an epidemic of mild yellow fever occurred in the Cuyuni River valley in Venezuela, S. A. There were outbreaks in the towns of El Callao, Curi, El Palmar and Guasipati. In this last town we saw 149 cases, of which five were fatal. Clinically, most of the cases were mild and without distinguishing features, but some developed in such a manner that a suspicion of yellow fever arose. Pathological changes and serological tests proved that the disease was yellow fever.

There are some facts which suggest that the region is a silent endemic focus of yellow fever or perhaps there is "jungle yellow fever" invading the towns.
