Medicine in Persia

By CYRIL ELGOOD, M.D., M.R.C.P. Pages i–xi, 1–105. In Clio Medica. Paul B. Hoeber, Inc., New York, 1934

Ernest Carroll Faust

This choice morsel of history and romance traces medicine in Persia and Arabia from mythological times to the present day. Although Persia produced no outstanding system of medicine as did Greece, her people not only preserved the Hippocratic doctrines for the world when civilization was in collapse, but served as torch bearers for the masters. Such men as Rhazes and Avicenna described accurately diseases like smallpox and cutaneous leishmaniasis and added croton oil, nux vomica, rhubarb and senna to the pharmacopeia.
