The Serum Protein Pattern, Liver Function Tests and Hematological Findings in the Differential Diagnosis of Amebic Liver Abscess*

S. J. Powell
Department of Medicine, University of Natal and the Amoebiasis Research Unit, {dagger} Durban, South Africa

1. The results of the haematological investigations, liver function tests and electrophoretic serum protein patterns are presented in 10 patients, each with cirrhosis of the liver, primary carcinoma of the liver and right basal pneumonia.
2. These findings are compared with each other, and with those in 31 cases of amebic liver abscess and 50 African controls.
3. It is concluded that, though the results indicate certain differences between these conditions, their value in differential diagnosis is not great.

* This investigation was supported in part by a grant from the South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research.

{dagger} The Amoebiasis Research Unit is sponsored by the following bodies: The South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, The Natal Provincial Administration, The University of Natal, The United States Public Health Service (Grant E-1592).
