Asa Crawford Chandler (1891–1958)

Asa Crawford Chandler was born in Newark, New Jersey, February 19, 1891, of English-Danish parentage. He grew up in nearby Maplewood, always interested in animals, especially birds. After graduation from South Orange High School in 1906, he went to Cornell University, his choice because of its biology department. Receiving his A.B. in 1911, he obtained a graduate assistantship in the Department of Zoology at the University of California. This caused the Newark Evening News to print his picture with the legend "20-year-old youth made college professor;" long preserved as an item for Chandlerian chuckles.

Having followed Horace Greeley's advice to "Go West, Young Man, Go West," he never returned to the Atlantic seaboard to live. He received the M.Sc. degree in 1912 at Berkeley, and his Ph.D. degree under Professor C. A. Kofoid in 1914, with a 223-page thesis, reflecting his bird interests, on "A Study of the Structure of Feathers, with Reference to Their Taxonomic Significance."
