Dear Sir

Regarding the report by Darwish and others, High seroprevalence of hepatitis A, B, C, and E viruses in residents in an Egyptian village in the Nile Delta: a pilot study, the authors claim that this is the first report of age-specific data on hepatitis E virus (HEV) in Egypt. We beg to differ. We published a report last year on the epidemiology of HEV in a truly rural village in the north central Nile Delta. The entire village population, less non-responsive individuals, participated in our study, a size almost ten times greater than that reported by Darwish and others. Accordingly, we showed age and sex-specific seroprevalence of HEV by five year age groups. These are the most detailed sex/age-specific seroprevalence data on HEV of which we are aware for Egypt, or anywhere else, and show much greater detail of HEV seroprevalence for the very young and older age groups.
