Introduction

At the 40th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, a symposium entitled "Prevention of Tropical Diseases: Status of New and Emerging Vector Control Strategies" was sponsored by the American Committee of Medical Entomology. As a result of the interest generated by this successful symposium, a decision was made to prepare a supplement for the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene to update workers in tropical medicine on current and emerging vector control strategies. Manuscripts were solicited on the 10 topics covered during the symposium and five additional titles were added to broaden the scope of the supplement.

This supplement is substantially different from a publication that deals with a similar topic entitled "Appropriate Technology in Vector Control" edited by Curtis. That excellent publication contains 13 chapters and focuses on "appropriate technology" or small-scale technologies that can be managed by communities, with minimal input from external sources.
