Welcoming Remarks

Gentlemen and colleagues,

In November 1911, when we marked the one-hundredth anniversary of the first cry in our war of independence, the first Central American Medical Congress was held in San Salvador under the auspices of Dr. Manuel Enrique Araujo, who was then President of the Republic.

At the first meeting of that Congress the statement was made that it was "of the utmost urgency to take all measures necessary to reduce the prevalence of malaria in Central America" and, as a result, a Central American League was organized and charged solely with directing all efforts to that end. That agency lived only a short time.

In February 1955 the first meeting of the Malaria Control Services Directors was held in San Salvador; the purpose of these meetings has been to coordinate all malaria control activities.

By another happy coincidence, now in November 1971, 150 years after our independence was ratified, another congress of scientists is meeting in San Salvador.
