This volume, by one of the most meticulous, accurate and able students of the insects, a physician who has had wide experience with clinical and epidemiological problems, is probably the most complete, authoritative and up-to-date treatise on medical entomology now available in any language. It is well organized, clearly written, well illustrated and well documented. It deals with the morphology, classification, development, habits and bionomics of each of the major groups of arthropods. Chapters are devoted to the parasitic arthropods and to those which produce venomous substances. The major portion of the text (pp. 364–551) is concerned with the arthropods as transmitters of disease-producing organisms: helminths, protozoans, spirochaetes, bacteria, rickettsias and viruses.

The revised, 4th edition of Martini's Lehrbuch is admirably suited as a textbook for university courses and as a reference book for zoologists, entomologists, physicians, veterinarians and public health workers.
