Zinsser's Textbook of Bacteriology

by David T. Smith, Norman F. Conant, Joseph W. Beard, Hilda Pope, D. Gordon Sharp and Mary A. Poston, of Duke University School of Medicine. 10th Edition. 1012 pp. 330 illustrations. New York, Appleton-Century-Crofts, Inc. 1952

John C. Snyder

The Tenth Edition of this well known textbook of bacteriology has been extensively and thoroughly revised by Smith and Conant. The present Edition in the opinion of this reviewer is a much better textbook for the use of students than its predecessor, the Ninth Edition. The chapters on diseases caused by bacteria have been condensed to allow more space for discussion of diseases caused by viruses; this shift might have been carried even further to advantage. Wherever the information was available the authors have introduced data on the susceptibility of microorganisms to antibiotics and have commented on the effects of ACTH and cortisone on specific infections. The important points which they wish to stress have been placed in bold face type; fine print has been used for technical details. References now are cited by number rather than by author in the actual text, a point which permits inclusion of new material without lengthening the book.
