Information from: Arbovirus Infections Unit, National Communicable Disease Center, Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A., 11 April 1969.
Antigenic group: Tacaribe.
Original source: Isolated by John Davie at the National Communicable Disease Center from heart tissue of adult male Sigmodon hispidus captured 5 January 1965 in box trap at Cowbone, Hendry County, Florida, Lat. 26° 17' N, Long. 81° 5' W. Habitat: Open sandy grassland with limestone outcrops. Elevation less than 25 feet. Vegetation: slash pine, palmetto, shrubs, and grasses. Storage: Tissue stored at -60°C until tested.
Method of isolation in laboratory: Heart tissue suspension prepared in 20% inactivated rabbit serum in saline solution containing penicillin and streptomycin. Inoculated 0.02 ml ic in 2- to 4-day-old mice on 3 March 1965.
Validity of isolation: Virus reisolated. No other viruses of this group ever in the laboratories; 26 additional strains isolated by the Epidemiology Research Center.
Properties of virus: Physical: Labile at 56°C for 30 minutes. Chemical: RNA virus.
