Information from: R. E. Shope, Yale Arbovirus Research Unit, 60 College Street, New Haven, Connecticut, U.S.A., 10 July 1969.

Antigenic group: Tete.

Original source: Isolated by Smithsonian field team in collaboration with personnel of YARU at New Haven, Conn., from serum of a normal adult (skull ossified) Oriolus oriolus netted on 2 September 1966 at Bahig Village, Matruh Governate, United Arab Republic, Lat. 31° N, Long. 30° E. Habitat: Irrigated garden oasis in semi-desert. Storage: Serum stored in sealed ampoule at -60°C until tested.

Method of isolation in laboratory: Undiluted serum inoculated 0.015 ml ic in 3-day-old mouse on 22 September 1966.

Validity of isolation: Virus reisolated. First virus of this type in laboratory.

Properties of virus: Physical: Filterable through Millipore 220 nm but not 100 nm. Chemical: No data. Resistance to chemicals: Sensitive to 1:500 sodium deoxycholate; control titer 10^5.4 LD₅₀ per 0.02 ml, after-treatment titer 10^2.0.
