Information from: B. G. Kirya and G. W. Kafuko, East African Virus Research Institute, Box 49, Entebbe, Uganda, 10 June 1969.
Antigenic group: Congo.
Original source: Isolated by Gh. Courtois at Provincial Medical Laboratory, Stanleyville (Kisangani) from serum of 13-year-old patient, collected by venipuncture on 6 March 1956 at the Provincial Medical Laboratory, Stanleyville, Lat. 0° 33' N, Long. 25° 14' E. Patient showed fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, backache, generalized joint pains, and photophobia.
Method of isolation in laboratory: Serum diluted in 0.75% bovine plasma albumin (Armour Factor V) in phosphate-buffer solution, pH 7.4. Inoculated ic and ip in 1-day-old mice on 6 March 1956.
Validity of isolation: Reisolation not tried. Patient not tested for development of homologous antibody.
Properties of virus: Physical: Variable results found with filtration through Seitz EK and Gradocol. Size estimated at 70 to 140 nm by Millipore membrane filtration.* Chemical: No data.
