Original source: Isolated by Robert P. Scrivani at the School of Public Health, University of California, from a pool of 50 female adult Culex tarsalis collected on 24 and 25 July 1962 in a Dry Ice-baited trap at Kern County, California, Lat. 36° 30' N, Long. 119° W. Habitat: Farmyard. Storage: Specimens stored in a sealed glass tube at -65°F until tested.
Method of isolation in laboratory: Ground mosquito suspension inoculated into primary hamster kidney-cell cultures on 1 August 1962. Maintenance medium 0.5% lactalbumin hydrolysate in Earle's BSS with 3% calf serum and 4 mg glucose per ml. CPE shown.
Validity of isolation: Virus reisolated. No similar virus in laboratory.
Properties of virus: Physical: No data. Chemical: No data. Resistance to chemicals: Sensitive to 1:1,000 sodium deoxycholate; control titer >107, after-treatment titer 102.
