Strain: Argas 2

Information from: C. Hannoun, Laboratoire des Arbovirus, Institut Pasteur, Paris 15, France, 1 January 1968.

Antigenic group: Uukuniemi.

Original source: Isolated by C. Hannoun and colleagues at Paris, France, from pool of 20 adult female Argas reflexus collected by hand on 15 January 1966 at Grand Arbaud, a farm near Gageron, Camargue, Rhone delta, Lat. 43° N, Long. 4° E. Habitat: Wall crevices, pigeon house on farm. Storage: Held alive in the laboratory, without feeding for 5 weeks.

Method of isolation in laboratory: Ticks homogenized in 0.75% bovine albumin in Hanks's solution. Inoculated 0.02 ml ic in 2-day-old mice on 22 February 1966.

Validity of isolation: Virus reisolated.

Properties of virus: Physical: Filterable through Millipore 220 nm; some loss of titer when filtered through Millipore 100 nm; not filterable through 50 nm APD. Size estimated at 50 to 100 nm by filtration. Chemical: No data. Resistance to chemicals: Sensitive to 1: 1,000 sodium deoxycholate; control titer >105.0, after-treatment titer <103.0.
