Information from: G. E. Sather, University of Pittsburgh, Graduate School of Public Health, Pittsburgh, Pa., U.S.A., 1 September 1968.

Antigenic group: Phlebotomus fever.

Original source: Isolated by G. E. Sather at Pittsburgh, Pa., from serum of young adult male with fever, chills, enlarged spleen, headache, and back, sacral, and retro-orbital pains. Blood taken in Pittsburgh hospital on 21 December 1966; patient probably infected in jungle area of Panamá, Lat. 9.5° N, Long. 79.4° W. Blood specimen collected 1 day after onset of fever, 3 days after onset of symptoms. Serum collected the following day did not yield a virus. Storage: Serum and clot stored at -60°C until tested.

Method of isolation in laboratory: Serum diluted in 10% nonimmune rabbit serum-sucrose PG, pH 7.2 to 7.5. Inoculated .01 ml ic and .03 ml ip in suckling mice on 6 January 1967.

Validity of isolation: Virus reisolated from clot. Homologous CF antibody developed in patient.
