Antigenic group: Group B.

Original source: Isolated by R. H. Whitehead and colleagues at Queensland Institute of Medical Research from whole blood of adult swamp pheasant (Centropus phasianinus) shot 1 April 1966 at Mitchell River Mission, Lat. 15° 28' S, Long. 141° 40' E. Habitat: Tropical tussock grassland and tropical woodland in low lying plain, altitude 6 meters, near Aboriginal Mission, 20 kilometers from the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Storage: Specimen transported to Brisbane over liquid nitrogen, then stored in -57°C Revco until inoculation into mice.

Method of isolation in laboratory: Blood diluted in 10% heated rabbit serum in phosphate-buffered saline solution, pH 7.6. Inoculated 0.015 ml ic in 1-day-old mice on 22 April 1966.

Validity of isolation: Virus reisolated. Virus also isolated from organs of same bird, and from mosquitoes collected in the same area at about the same time.
