The Physician's Book Compendium is billed as the "indispensable reference volume" to guide the physician to the books which will provide a continuing education. The reviewer, however, cannot escape the impression that it is a rather hastily, though elaborately, contrived book dealer's catalogue, complete with conveniently bound-in, postage free, order cards addressed to the dealer, P.B.C. Sales Inc., a subsidiary of Physician's Book Compendium Inc.

To the physician without any access to a medical library, the Compendium offers much useful information about currently available books in the medical and para-medical fields, but its usefulness is impaired by its haphazard and inconsistent arrangement. Classification of books by medical specialty can scarcely be criticized; but the order in which the specialties appear in this volume is neither alphabetical nor in accord with any other recognizable or logical sequence, and the subspecialties are not consistently listed under the appropriate specialty.In these circumstances a detailed table of contents does not compensate for the lack of a subject index, nor does it provide quick access to the location of material.
