Herm's Medical Entomology

The sixth edition of Herm's familiar textbook has 122 fewer pages than the fifth edition. The reduction is made up in part by larger page size, a double column format, and smaller print, but also it demonstrates that there have been extensive revisions. Entirely new chapters have been added. One of these, entitled "Epidemiology," deals with various characteristics of disease vectors, vertebrate hosts, and pathogenic organisms; another is concerned with the evolution of parasitism; and a third with methods of control of medically important arthropods. The latter chapter presents the general principles of control, a review of public health pesticides, and specific measures applicable to the medically important arthropods. Much information in the former editions has been replaced with newer findings, as for example, many of the more recently discovered viruses and their vectors. There has been a reduction in the taxonomic sections, which the authors feel is justified because other manuals on identification of medically important arthropods are available.
