This volume represents a rare collection of data on the course of mortality over time in each of 17 countries in Latin America.
The objective of this work was to establish the mortality level in each of the countries considered, not only at the present, but also as far in the past as practicable. This is accomplished through the construction and presentation of life tables for several time periods for each country. Deficiencies in the registration of vital statistics and census data in many of these countries have, heretofore, prevented such an analysis of mortality. In this volume the author has resolved these problems by using a new method of life-table construction devised by himself and based upon stable population theory.
This new method of life-table construction is adequately described and is, in itself, a topic of considerable importance and worthy of study because of its potential usefulness in other areas with similar problems in their data-collection systems.
