Nearly 87 years have passed since Alphonse Laveran announced to the Academy of Medicine of Paris his discovery, on the 6th November of that year, of an animal parasite in the blood of malaria patients and his association of it with the disease. In the intervening years research on the true malaria parasites and zoologically related genera has been extensively documented. Until the publication of this opus magnum of Prof. Garnham, the student of the hematozoa has had to be content with the necessarily abbreviated discussion of these parasites in textbooks of parasitology or protozoology, in monographs on malariology, or in specialized monographs such as Hewitt's Bird Malaria (1940). Alternatively he had recourse to original articles scattered throughout numerous journals in several languages and often not easily available to him.
